Other SU positions quickly filled
With the controversy surrounding the main three sabbatical positions, much less attention was given to the unpaid roles in this year’s SU election.
The closest battle was between the two humanities candidates, Derwin Brennan and Dara McGann. With this year’s accommodation officer Brennan receiving 177 votes, McGann was elected as the new humanities and social sciences convenor for 09/10 with 253 of the ballot.
John Needham is the new engineering and computing convenor, receiving more than twice the amount of votes as rival Padraig O’Connor. Needham gained 172 votes from the engineering student body in comparison to O’Connor’s 82.
Uncontested positions such as the election of the business convenor were more straightforward. Md Sharif Hossain was elected to this position with a total of 425 students agreeing to the role and only 63 students voting against his election.
New clubs and socs officer William Coyne received a resounding vote of confidence from the student body, gaining 93% support from the 1834 valid votes.
Newly elected equality officer Cara Murphy also won comprehensively, receiving 1704 votes from a total of 1886 valid votes – meaning that every nine out of ten votes was a yes vote in her favour.
159 votes separated the two science and health convenor candidates. Jenny Quigley received 423 votes compared to rival John Devine’s total of 264 to take the role for the coming academic year.
