DCU Devils win League Title

The DCU Devils Ladies’ Rugby team have brought home some well-deserved silverware and the title of League Champions, after a hard fought win over Tralee IT in the final at the Belfield Bowl in UCD on March 25th.

Victorious captain Aoife “Barbie” O’Brien held up the cup, congratulating the team and everyone involved with the Devils since the start of the season as contributors to the success.

The game on the day though was one of the team’s toughest to date, facing off last year’s finalists Tralee, a team who the Devils had beaten earlier in the season but who were still not to be underestimated.

DCU’s Ladies started off with off with a bang with an early try by Doireann Bregazzi, converted by the outhalf Paula Fitzpatrick. A sustained spell of DCU dominance followed and by the end of the first half the Ladies of DCU were leading 15-0.

Tralee came back strong in the second half to give the Devils a run for the title; however the strength of the league leaders proved too much. Despite scoring one converted try and two unconverted tries, Tralee didn’t manage to bridge the gap and DCU managed to hold them off.

After applying a lot of pressure and hard work the better team won and the DCU Devils were crowned the league champions.

The Devils are now looking forward to the upcoming intervarsity competition, which is being held in Cork. The Devils have their sights on their own version of the Grand Slam by winning the division league along with their league title.
