Journalism bursary
Budding journalists are being given the chance to display their talents by entering the Veronica Guerin Memorial Bursary.
The bursary award was set up in 2006 by DCU’s School of Commu- nications and Independent News and Media to mark the tenth an- niversary of the murdered Sunday Independent journalist.
The commemorative grant of €8,500 is intended to cover fees and expenses for any present or prospective student of the MA in Journalism who plans to specialise in investigative journalism.
Last year Kildare native Joanna Kiernan became the first student to win the bursary for her project entitled ‘Victims of Crime and the People Who Prey on Them’.
She says: “It’s a great motiva- tion. The bursary is a good focus, it makes you very determined. It’s an honour. Veronica Guerin was one of the bravest journalists of our time.”
The application conditions state that the applicant must propose an outline for their final thesis or ma- jor project by noon on 28 April.
