The SU election results at a glance

After a hectic week of canvassing across campus, the DCU student body have elected a new Students’ Union for the next academic year.

1400 students came out to cast their votes, representing just 17.5pc of those eligible to do so. Despite the low numbers, Returning Offi cer for the election John Gallagher was pleased with the turnout.

“I have to say that I was a bit worried because a lot of candidates ran unopposed, so I thought that reaching the quorum was going to be a problem,” says Gallagher.

“But it turns out that this year we were only 300 votes shorter than last year so I was very pleased by how it worked out in the end.”

Counting began at 7pm last Thursday night. The fi rst decision to be made was on the new SU constitution, with the majority of students giving a yes vote to this legislature’s amendment.

According to Gallagher this decision will impact most heavily on the representation of the university’s nursing students within the Union.

“The science faculty breaks into two giving nursing its own faculty. As [the constitution] stands we wouldn’t be able to have a convenor for nursing so we had to change that,” he says.

As the night continued the results flowed in until fi nally after seven hours of counting the last man standing was elected, with Niall McClave securing his place as next year’s SU President.

After the gruelling election process, our Returning Offi cer had just three words to describe his job over the past week: “stressful”, “diffi cult” and “long”.

“For the two days of the elections I was just working straight from 9am till 10pm and then on again at 9am until 2 the following morning,” says Gallagher.
