Walshie leads the way against DKIT
DCU footballers cruised to a comfortable away victory over DKIT in the Ryan Cup and booked a quarter-final date against Ulster opposition.
They registered a score of 4-15 with all six forwards notching up points to comfortably defeat DKIT, who could only manage 0-5 in reply.
The writing was on the wall from the start when David Keenan kicked two points inside the opening three minutes to set DCU on their way.
DCU scored another point minutes later through Shane Roche after some fine build up play from captain on the day Conor Mortimer and Brian Sheridan.
DKIT threatened with a close range free kick that struck keeper Phillip Brogan’s post and went wide. Brogan was only once called into action in the game when he made a fine point blank save inside the square on ten minutes.
The onslaught continued when Martin McElhinney won a kick out and went on a solo run before scoring a fine point.
The hosts finally got off the mark moments later with a free kick from close distance, but Ciaran Walsh and Mortimer extended the visitor’s lead with two points a piece.
Things went from bad to worse for DKIT.
A long ball to Mortimer allowed him to pick out Brian Sheridan who scored DCU’s opening goal with a low shot past the keeper.
Mortimer was in the thick of the action again minutes later when a smart one-two with Walsh allowed the latter to score another goal.
The home team did notch up two points before halftime, but Mortimer, Sheridan and McElhinney scored a point each to make the half time score 2-11 to 0-3.
DKIT needed to start the second half strongly to maintain the game as a contest, but some excellent defending from DCU meant they could only register a further two points.
Despite facing a strong breeze in the second half, DCU took complete control and registered further points from Mortimer (two), Walsh and McArdle. Two more goals were also scored by Keenan and McArdle which sees DCU serious league contenders.
