Niall Moyna Sigerson Cup draw reaction - website exclusive
DCU GAA coach Niall Moyna bemoaned his team’s “unlucky” fortune after being handed an away draw in the Sigerson Cup first round for the eighth time in nine years.
The draw which took place on Wednesday pitted DCU against three-time champions Sligo IT on February 4, 2009. The winner will face hosts Cork IT in the second round.
Although Moyna affirms that all contenders for the Sigerson will be strong, he says DCU have potentially the toughest route to the final.
“Any draw you get is going to be a difficult draw but it is not unusual for us,” he said. “It is the eighth time in nine years we’ve been drawn away in the first round. We have been very unlucky.”
Despite his side’s lack of good fortune at getting the luck of the draw, the DCU coach warned there are no easy games. Moyna insists the one-off nature of the competition makes every match a 50-50 bet.
He said: “On the day any team can beat any other team. Any game is going to be difficult regardless of who you are playing.
“Sligo are a quality team and we are expecting a big challenge,” said Moyna whose team reached the semi-finals of the Division One league.
DCU have twice fallen at the first hurdle since they won the Cup back in 2006. Moyna, however, says progressing far in the competition would be a “huge step” forward and a “wonderful experience” for his young team.
