DCU bow out of Sigerson in extra time

CIT 1-15
DCU 0-14

DCU made a shock exit from the Sigerson cup last weekend when CIT came out on top of a bruising encounter in Cork.

It took until the 15th minute for DCU to register their first score of the game in the form of midfielder Ray Cullivan.

CIT had the better of the early exchanges with Colm O’Neill opening their account before Cork Senior Football star Daniel Goulding pointed twice in quick succession.

A further score from the Cork students widened the gap to three points after 21 minutes played.

DCU rallied towards the end of the half with three points from dangerman Seanie Johnston and Cullivan’s second of the game to leave the scores five apiece at the interval.

Early points in the second period from Cullivan and Conor Mortimer (free) looked to have set the tone but DCU were rocked 13 minutes in when CITs Colm O’Neill rattled the net after a powerful run from midfield.

DCU went 10 minutes without a score before another Mortimer free and a Seanie Johnston score brought the game to within a point with five minutes to go.

Cavan’s Ronan Flanagan then traded scores with CIT half forward Paul Kerrigan before a brawl erupted involving both sets of players and substitutes.

Once order was restored a late point from Martin McEleroy sent the tie into extra time.

However the Dublin team could not contain a rampant CIT side lead by the impressive Daniel Goulding who tacked on three vital points after normal time.

Their misery was compounded when a mistaken identity saw substitute Michael Lyng sent off after receiving a yellow card. In the end CIT ran out four point winners in this ill-tempered affair.
