Varied success for Ladies football
DCU intermediates have also had a busy recent championship campaign with two tight and exciting encounters against DIT and GMIT.
Playing away to DIT in the Lynch Cup first round, DCU served up a wonderful display of football with particularly impressive performances from Shona King, Ciara Daly and Lorna Atkinson.
Unfortunately they suffered a narrow tow point defeat with Dublin senior star Sinead Aherne securing victory for DIT in the last minute.
Picking themselves up from the first round disappointment, DCU turned their attentions to the Lynch Shield and a home tie against GMIT on Monday 23rd Feb. Played out in perfect conditions in St Clares, this proved to be a tight and extremely entertaining face-off between two evenly-matched sides.
Level at the end of normal time, DCU’s superior fitness served them well in extra time and they pulled away to win 4-06 to 2-08, with Claire Murtagh, Carla Moran and Rosanna Heeney putting in heroic performances to help DCU to their first win in the Shield competition.
DCU are now only one victory away from qualifying for the Shield final and varsity weekend in Belfast at the end of March. They will meet the Guards of Templemore this week and hopefully secure their place in Belfast with the seniors.
