Three DCU journalism students were amongst the winners at the annual Irish Student Media Awards.

The high profile awards took place in a ceremony at the Mansion House earlier this month and were hosted by DJ Ray Foley. DCU’s tally marked an improvement on last year when the university failed to claim a single award.

DCU had been nominated for 14 awards in total including best layout and design, best website, best society publication, national press journalist of the year and short story of the year.

Previous editor of the College View, Michael McHale, was the recipient of one of the most prestigious awards on the night – journalist of the year.

McHale’s category was judged by the editor of the Irish Examiner, with the third year journalism student’s news articles from the College View catching the judge’s eye.

Sports features written by second year Stephen Mangan ensured he came away with the award for sportswriter of the year, a category judged by the Irish Mirror’s soccer correspondent.

MA journalism student Joey Kavanagh was named as the winner of the Headline award for journalism relating to suicide prevention or mental health for his radio documentary on obsessive compulsive disorder. The category was judged by the social affairs correspondent of The Irish Times.

The main prize on the night - the title of newspaper of the year - went to Trinity College’s independent newspaper, Trinity News.
