Future Of The Left - Last Night I Saved Her from Vampires | 3.5/5

Welsh rock band Future Of The Left recorded this live album in August 2008. The three piece consists of Andy Falco Falkous and Jack Egglestone, formerly of the Mclusky, along with Hywel Evans, formerly of Jarcrew.

Last Night I Saved Her from Vampires contains tracks from the debut album Curses, along with some new tracks from the second studio album, Travels With Myself and Another, which is due out in June this year. The production values are better than would be expected for a band without the endless cash flow of a major label.

Curses was well received by critics and fans alike. The NME were particularly praiseworthy, making the song Manchasm their single of the week . The live setting seems to do nothing but compliment this track, and all the others, with Small Bones, Small Bodies being especially impressive.

The songs are unique, sounding very different to the members’ former bands, but often managing to be clever, funny and angry at the same time. The vocals in particular are amazing with Falco and Evans both giving it their all and often sounding better than the studio recordings, not a regular occurance in live albums.

The rapport that the band has with the crowd is something that really sets this record apart from many other live albums, withthe band even resorting to passing out Jaffa cakes to the fans during the encore

The new songs are promising and should the band be able to fill the new album with tracks as good as those showcased here 2009 will be an excellent year for FOTL. A performance like this will do wonders for the band’s already fast growing reputation.
