Isolated & Destroyed: Andrew WK’s Xmas message
The world may not be the kindest place right now and for the last Flux of the year I knew you needed someone to help you look to the future. Someone to give you hope. As you and I know, I’m probably not that dude. So I sat down and I considered. Who is the best person I know to wake people up of the beauty of the lives their living. Bono? No, he’s the opposite; I needed more than an inspirational figure. I needed a goddamn fucking force of nature. I did have a person in mind but I couldn’t imagine him actually getting back to me. But because being awesome is a thing you do 24/7 he came through. That’s right reader, I got Andrew WK.
If you’re not familiar with Andrew WK, you should be. He wrote Party Hard and She is Beautiful, two of the first great songs of the decade. He also continues to write incredible Sparks-y balls-out feel-good music and rocks it incredibly hard. He is part ownerer of the coolest nightclub in New York. He presents the world’s most awesome kids show Destroy Build Destroy. He is the right man for the job, every job. The following is the unedited email he sent me when I asked for a message for the irish student population:
“My name is Andrew W.K. and a man named Sean McTiernan invited me to say a few words to the Irish student population. This is an opportunity I take seriously and truly appreciate, so I will do my best to say something here that’s valuable or hopefully exciting in some way:
“I strongly recommend that you PARTY. And when I say, “PARTY”, I mean to celebrate. And when I say, “celebrate”, I mean to really look at your life and be grateful for the the goodness within it. There may’ve been bad times, there may’ve been bad feelings. But right now, we’re thinking about the good parts of your life and the world - the people we love, the music that thrills us, the food that fills us - and we’re revelling in the joy that can be found in so many simple and diverse pleasures. When we celebrate these parts of our lives, we show them respect and in return, create a ritualistic focus on what we love, amplyfying it.
“The more we think about and revel in the stuff that lifts us up, the more our life will become full of power and joy. So I say, let us totally awash ourselves in what makes us happy, and spend our mental, emotional, and spiritual energy on the pursuits for which our body yearns. We can feel when our heart and soul is being nourished, and I urge us to gorge ourselves, rather than starve our spirits. Take the time today, and whenever you think of it, to celebrate and party about BEING ALIVE. Every moment of every day is a precious vision of possibility and fun. Remember that even though a lot has happened in this world, WE are STILL happening and haven’t happened yet - we are here now, and this is our chance to enjoy and thrive on life. Do all the biggest and craziest things you can imagine. Do what makes you feel good. Do what you were born to do. THAT is PARTYING HARD! Now, go! Go! Go! Go! GO PARTY!
