‘We put in a serious amount of training throughout the year and it paid off today’
Speaking after the game DCU manager Niall Moyna said he was pleased with a “very good team performance” against the reigning champions CIT.
In particular Moyna seemed to highlight the importance of DCU’s ability to stick to their game plan of not allowing quality ball reaching the CIT full forward line.
Moyna believed that CIT would “have to work very hard” to get their scores and felt that his team ‘reaped the rewards’ of their effective game plan.
Moyna pointed out that a crucial factor in DCU’s success was their ability to convert their chances during their period of dominance.
Moyna said “when your chance to dominate comes you have to put it away and that’s what we did today”.
When asked about DCU’s chances of success Moyna was coy with his answer saying “once you get to the last four of any competition anyone can win it”.
DCU wing back, Darrach Mooney felt that their preparation for the game was perfect and believed that their rigorous training regime allowed them to up the intensity levels in the second half when needed.
“We put in a serious amount of training throughout the year and it paid off today, were just one big unit from one to 40 and we’ve been fabulous throughout the year”.
Mooney felt that the team played within themselves in the first half saying “we were only in second gear in the first half, but in the second half we really took off”.
Meanwhile a despondent CIT selector Sean O’Keefe said he was “very disappointed with our display”. O’Keefe went on to say that “we (CIT) underperformed but full credit to DCU, they deserved victory”.
O’Keefe also went on to praise DCU’s game plan saying “the way DCU lined out made it very difficult for us to get our forwards involved, but our display was very poor, we travelled up here expecting to win.”
