Foodie Soc is the newest society to grace the steps of DCU. It was at the end of last year that DCU students Carmel Sayers and Eimear Phelan originally came up with the idea to set up a society that teaches students how to cook wholesome and healthy meals.
The College View had the chance to talk to the society’s chairperson Carmel Sayers and secretary Sinead O’Brien to find out what it’s all about. “Foodie Soc is a society which caters for students who have exotic appetites and students who have different dietary requirements” said Sinead. “Whether you’re a vegetarian, diabetic or lactose intolerant, this society will provide you with an outlet to try new foods and recipes” she said.
Although Foodie Soc is a new society it already has 82 members. There are plans to offer cooking demonstrations throughout the year as well as activities and days out for the society’s members. There are also plans to team up with other societies and create fun events in which food plays a central role.
The society’s chairperson Carmel said “We got the idea to set up the Foodie Soc from the realisation that most students who come to college are living away from home for the first time and they often live on a diet that consists of noodles, bread and vodka.” According to the girls “Foodie Soc is a society to show you that food is an essential part of life and therefore it is important that everyone has the fundamentals to cook for themselves”.
The society’s next big event is at Halloween when there will be a three course meal in Cornucopia restaurant with live theatre. Foodie Soc also offers discounts on food and drink in places such as the Rolling Doughnut, the kiosk which can be found on O’Connell Street and Wagamama located in South King’s Street.
Sinead, the society’s secretary, said “The main motto of Foodie Soc is “to think outside the chicken roll” and the society would love to hear from you. If you love to cook or can’t cook at all, join Foodie Soc. You won’t regret it.” You can join it through the society’s Facebook page or up at the Students’ Union.
