It has been a hectic year for last year’s winners of the X Factor and now Little Mix have just released their debut album DNA.
Between attending award shows, doing promotions and recording in studio, Tulisa’s “lil’ muffins” have certainly grown up and formed an edgy, old-school style.
DNA certainly shows off the band’s tight harmonies while still highlighting the distinct and identifiable voices of Perrie, Jesy, Jade and Leigh-Anne.
A lot of the songs on the album are reminiscent of the nineties girl-band sound. “How Ya Doin?” captures this perfectly with a funky electric guitar beat. It sounds familiar to En Vogue’s “Don’t Let Go”, the song which made Little Mix become the frontrunners of the X Factor in 2011.
In keeping with the nineties theme, “Red Planet” sees the girls collaborate with T-Boz, a member of the world-famous girl-band TLC.
Hit singles “Wings” and “DNA”, which won the band a legion of teenage fans, also feature on the album.
The best track on the by far is “Turn Your Face”. The ballad captures Jade Thirlwall’s voice beautifully as she hits high notes with a delicate and smooth vocal.
With tracks on DNA written by Steve Mac and TMS who have previously penned songs for JLS and Professor Green, it’s no doubt that this album will be a success. DNA is pop at its best.
