Music week in DCU is one of the highlights of the academic year. Events officer, Jessica Dowdall said, “Music Week has been our busiest, most wonderfully packed week so far this year. We offered something for everyone and the response was better than we could have ever expected.” This year, DCU’s Music Society brought us a busking competition; open mic night; and piano, guitar, vocal, and songwriting master classes. Add a film screening co-hosted by DCU Film Soc (with free pizza supplied by Firehouse Pizza) and multiple showcases to that and a great week is in store.
The headline event of the week was the Music Soc Showcase, which saw the brightest and most talented musicians in DCU perform in The Old Bar on Thursday. Auditions were held to find the best performers for the event. Music Soc Chairperson, Gemma Burke, “We were overwhelmed by the people who auditioned. It was hard to turn people down because everyone who auditioned was so talented.” It was just €3 in which got you free into D2 and a chance of winning two tickets to see Eminem and a new guitar, kindly supplied by Music Week sponsors X Music.
PR Officer, Sarah Jordan stated, “It was great that so many people came, because there is a lot of talent in DCU.” While DCU X-Factor winner and performer on the night, Glenn Griffin, said “all of the acts were amazing.”
The busking competition saw all sorts of musicians perform in The Hub, while committee members gave out cupcakes and buns to help brighten up a student’s day. Chairperson Gemma Burke even rapped and showcased her rendition of “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift (goat edition).
The songwriting workshop culminated in a showcase of the songs written during the workshop, with other songwriters performing as well showcasing the array of talent here in DCU. Equipment officer, Rory O’Connell said, “All of the content was original. There was a great turn out, there were over fifty people there.”
All this fun and activity was bound to leave Music Soc members with a sore head on Friday morning. The committee organized a recovery breakfast to help cure an action and music filled week.
