We’ve all felt the pain of trying to stay fit and healthy in college, with Dominos only a phone call away and the couch a safer bet than the treadmill. It’s hard to get motivated without the wise words of mammy in your ear and little more than pocket change to your name, so here are a few ways of keeping fit without burning a hole in your bank card (we are students after all).
Though not for everyone, nearby gyms offer great student deals and it pays to shop around. DCU Sport’s student membership package includes full unlimited use of the fitness centre, pool facilities, and access to free classes from just €195 for the academic year. This can help to cut costs for a cash-strapped student as you won’t end up paying for membership during the summer holidays. Ballymun Leisure Centre is just a 15 minute walk from DCU and offers annual student memberships for €210, along with the option to join for three or six month periods. (By the time you’re there and back, that’s another half hour’s exercise to feel good about).
If you’re not looking to spend any money, make use of DCU’s campus and surroundings by going for a walk or jog in the evenings. Bring a friend to keep you motivated and to stay safe; not only will you stay fit, but you’ll feel refreshed and energised after a long day of college. Alternatively, grab some friends for a game of soccer on the astro-turf pitches, or do a lap or two on the running track.
Another way to stay fit on the cheap is to join sports clubs or societies. Membership costs just €4 and clubs extend to everything from soccer to snow-sports. Get involved; it’s a great way to meet new people and being active in a sport you enjoy is a sure way to keep fit.
If you don’t fancy leaving the house, power up the laptop and search for fitness tutorials on YouTube. There’s videos to suit all tastes, from aerobics to cardio and you won’t have to worry about making a fool of yourself in the confines of your bedroom (just remember to draw the curtains).
Lastly, remember not to overdo it. Exercise is essential to stay in shape, but over-exertion isn’t beneficial either, so gradually ease yourself in and build up stamina to get the most out of your workout.
