DCU student Shepherd Machaya’s deportation order was extended today until March 21st.

The second year University of Sanctuary student, originally from Zimbabwe, was initially issued with the deportation order in September. It was then extended to February 5th after a large scale campaign dubbed ‘Save Our Shepherd’.

DCU Students’ Union President Vito Moloney Burke commended the “robust and impressive” report that Machaya’s solicitor submitted to the Department of Justice.

The file criticised the Department’s approach to the case, outlined the worsening situation in Zimbabwe, and detailed Machaya’s job prospects.

“If we don’t get the right response from this proposal to the Department, there very much will be a large scale campaign again, online and on the ground,” said Moloney Burke. “We will do everything we can to put it to the Department to let them know what a mistake they’re making, how much of an atrocity this is.”

“If there needs to be, there will be war over this.”
