All universities and colleges across the country are set to close due to coronavirus, according to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
The announcement, made during the Taoiseach’s official visit to Washington, explained that due to the COVID-19 outbreak measures will be taken to close schools and higher education institutions from Friday March 13th to Sunday March 29th.
“We’ve been preparing for all eventualities”, said Varadkar, “Where possible teaching will be done online or remotely”
All indoor mass gatherings of more than 100 people, or outdoor of more than 500 should be cancelled, according to Varadkar.
“Unfortunately we must face the tragic reality that some people will die”, said Varadkar.
DCU have issued a statement saying that special arrangements for staff will be communicated later today, so essential services can be maintained.
Students will also receive information on their study programmes later today. Londis on the Glasnevin campus will remain open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday at a reduced functionality.
Varadkar also explained that public transport will continue to operate, as well as shops being kept open.
This comes as the number of COVID-19 cases reaches 43 in the Republic of Ireland.
