UCD has hired Covid-19 compliance officers as part of additional measures in order to ensure that students are following the current health regulations and restrictions.
The officers work on campus, but focus on residences to enforce compliance with the most recent Level 3 regulations. UCD residences have banned social gatherings with people from other households and overnight guest stays.
The college has not outlined any specific punishments that may be enforced for breaking the rules but the university’s security team are closely monitoring residences to ensure that the rules are being followed.
This decision followed a recent trend of universities around the country putting more effort into the fight against the virus, and keeping the students and staff safe.
University Limerick president Kerstin Mey was seen patrolling on-campus and off campus residences around Castleroy with Garda patrols to make sure that students were taking personal responsibility for their health, as well as that of the community.
Speaking to RTE, President Mey said “Our presence is to show a shared responsibility for community welfare through direct visibility with Gardaí who are out on patrol in the normal course of their work.”
“We are hoping our presence will help with the message that for students, behaviour in the general community is directly linked to their status as a UL student” said Mey.
As Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced Level 3 restrictions throughout the country for three weeks, DCU continued the plan of the hybrid learning model with most lectures being delivered online and reduced capacity on campus. This plan has now been extended for the duration of semester one.
DCU’s human resources department stated that “the university is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all staff and students by adhering to government guidelines when addressing our return to campus. With robust risk assessments and safety measures in place at all times, we are working hard to keep you safe.
“Staff will receive information regarding the specifics of their return to campus from their relevant line Manager/Unit Head.”
As of now, it is not yet known whether DCU will follow in the direct footsteps of UCD by hiring Covid-19 compliance staff for the three campuses as well as student accommodation.
