“Period poverty affects more women in our communities than we realise…it is ridiculous that period poverty exists in Ireland in this day and age it is so wrong that in 2021 people are thanking you for getting them pads,”Claire Hunt from Period Poverty Ireland said.
Period poverty is defined as not having access to the products necessary during a period, such as tampons, sanitary pads, menstrual cups or pain relief.
Period poverty refers to the inability to access menstrual products, because of financial difficulties and often leads to women missing work, college or school.
In Ireland, the situation stands at almost 50 per cent of teenage girls aged between 12-19 finding it difficult to afford sanitary products, in a survey conducted by Plan International Ireland.
